Martin Landau

Postby Bill Mullins » July 17th, 2017, 9:30 am

Martin Landau, who played magician Rollin Hand on the 1960s version of Mission Impossible, died Saturday. He was one of those actors who, no matter what he was in, made it more interesting to watch.

This is perhaps an odd observation, but when I was a kid reading Charlton Comics, I thought a lot of the characters looked like Martin Landau.

I never made that connection myself, but now that you point it out . ..

Odd coincidence, Landau was a cartoonist before he was an actor.

I remember him in a UK TV series Space 1999 in the seventies, which I'm sure would have played in the US. As I recall another Mission Impossible alumnus was also in it - Barbara Bain.

Yes they were, for a while, and Space:1999 did run in the U.S. It's the first place I remember seeing Landau (I didn't see MI until later reruns). He was also awfully good in Tucker and Ed Wood and Rounders.

Re: Mission: Impossible's magic connections: Leonard Nimoy replaced Landau for seasons 4 & 5, also playing a magician ("The Great Paris"). One of the head writers on the show was William Read Woodfield, magician and creator of the "Magicana" section of Genii.

I think his best role was this one:

I also loved him in that Twilight Zone episode with the bomb in the room ("The Jeopardy Room").

Landau was great and made anything he starred in that much more interesting. I liked one of his last roles as the doctor in the X-Files film who uncloaks the government conspiracy to develop an alien virus.
